29 Diner

Officially the "Tastee 29 Diner," the 29 is the only diner in Fairfax that is also a historical landmark. This diner has been around since 1947 and needs no introduction to most locals. The place only has about six booths and a line of stools at the counter. The jukebox plays almost exclusively country music and you can get Wing Dings if you have a hankerin'.

The dining staff is characteristically quirky (think "Kiss My Grits"), especially the people who work the graveyard shift. They are open round the clock, so you can always get a plate of comfort food, even if Ike's is closed. The food is cheap, with a decent meal coming out at about $7, plus tip. If you want pie, that'll cost you a little extra. All other things aside, their milkshakes are good, authentic treats that are served in both a glass and a half-empty metal mixer cup (per tradition).

The diner can be found along Route 29 (Lee Highway), just to the left of the juncture between Chainbridge and 29 (going away from the University). Check out this map:
