George Mason University began as the Northern Virginia branch of the University of Virginia in 1957. Eager to support the fledgling institution, the Town (now City) of Fairfax purchased 150 acres in 1958 and donated it to the University of Virginia for a permanent branch campus. In 1966, the General Assembly authorized the expansion of George Mason College into a four-year, degree-granting institution with the long-range mandate to expand into a major regional university.
In 1972 George Mason University became an independent member of the commonwealth's system of colleges and universities. Since then, the university's development has been marked by rapid growth and innovative planning. Employing the revolutionary concept of the "distributed" university, George Mason acquired the George Mason University School of Law and a campus in Arlington in 1979. The Prince William Campus was established in Prince William County in 1997. The 150 acres that once was the entire George Mason University campus has become the 677-acre Fairfax Campus. Mason began having classes in Loudoun in the fall of 2005.
Along with the George Mason University Administrative offices, the Fairfax campus contains such facilities as the George W. Johnson Center, the Center for the Arts complex, Patriot Center, a 113,900-square-foot Recreation Sports Complex, and a 66,000-square-foot Aquatic and Fitness Center.

DIRECTIONS TO FAIRFAX CAMPUS (4400 University Dr.) FROM THE CAPITAL BELTWAY (I-495)
Take exit 54A, Braddock Road West (Route 620). Follow Braddock Road West for approximately six miles.* Pass the first entrance to the university and turn right at the stop light at Roanoke River Road. Bear right at the fork in the road. Take your first left onto Mason Pond Drive; parking is available in the Parking Deck, the last building on the right. An information kiosk is located outside the third level of the deck to help you navigate the campus.
*Alternate 1: Take a right on Nottoway Lane; Left on Patriot Circle; Right on Mason Pond Drive to the Parking Deck.

Exit at the Fairfax County Parkway South (Route 7100). Exit the Parkway at Braddock Road, and turn left onto Braddock Road. Take the first left past Route 123 (Ox Road) onto Roanoke River Road.* Bear right at the fork in the road. Take the first left on Mason Pond Drive to the Parking Deck, the last building on your right. An information kiosk is located outside the third level of the deck to help navigate the campus.

*Alternate: Take the second left past Route 123 (Ox Road) onto Nottoway Lane; Take a left on Patriot Circle; Right on Mason Pond Drive to the Parking Deck.

DIRECTIONS TO FAIRFAX CAMPUS (4400 University Dr.) VIA I-66W FROM WASHINGTON D.C. OR ARLINGTON
Take exit 60 at Route 123 South, Chain Bridge Road. Follow Route 123 through the City of Fairfax, and turn left at University Drive. Take your first right at Occoquan River Lane. Turn right at the stop sign onto Patriot Circle. At the pond, bear left to stay on Patriot Circle. Take your first left on Mason Pond Drive to the Parking Deck, the last building on your right. An information kiosk is located outside the third level of the deck to help navigate the campus.
*Note: All westbound lanes of I-66 inside the Beltway are restricted to HOV-2 from 4:00 pm to 6:30 pm.

DIRECTIONS TO FAIRFAX CAMPUS (4400 University Dr.) FROM I-95 (NORTH OR SOUTH) From points north on I-95, take exit 27 (I-495 West), then follow the directions "from the Capital Beltway (I-495)." From points south on I-95, take exit 160B (Route 123 North) at Lake Ridge/Occoquan. Follow Route 123 north for approximately 15 miles to Braddock Road. Turn right on Braddock Road. At first signal, turn left on Roanoke River Road.* Bear right at the fork in the road. Take your first left onto Mason Pond Drive to the Parking Deck, the last building on your right. An information kiosk is located outside the third level of the deck to help navigate the campus.

*Alternate : Take the second left past Route 123 (Ox Road) onto Nottoway Lane; Take a left on Patriot Circle; Right on Mason Pond Drive to the Parking Deck.

DIRECTIONS TO FAIRFAX CAMPUS (4400 University Dr.) FROM WASHINGTON D.C. & ARLINGTON VIA ROUTE 50
Take Route 50 west to I-495 South (Capital Beltway) toward Richmond. Take exit 54, Braddock Road West (Route 620), and take the westbound fork. Follow Braddock Road West for approximately 6 miles.* Pass the first entrance to the University and turn right at the next light at Roanoke River Road. Bear right at the fork in the road; turn left on Mason Pond Drive; parking is available in the Parking Deck, the last building on the right. An information kiosk is located outside the third level of the deck to help navigate the campus.

*Alternate 1: Take a right on Nottoway Lane; Left on Patriot Circle; Right on Mason Pond Drive to the Parking Deck.

DIRECTIONS TO FAIRFAX CAMPUS (4400 University Dr.) FROM WASHINGTON DULLES INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT
Exit the airport onto the Dulles Access Road, which leads to the Dulles Toll Road at Route 267, Reston Parkway. Exit the Dulles Toll Road (no toll required) at exit 11, Fairfax County Parkway South. Follow the Parkway, and exit at Braddock Road. At the signa turn left on Braddock Road. Take the first left past Route 123 onto Roanoke River Road*, and go right at the fork in the road. Take your first left onto Mason Pond Drive to the Parking Deck, the last building on your right. An information kiosk is located outside the third level of the deck to help navigate the campus.
*Alternate : Take the second left past Route 123 (Ox Road) onto Nottoway Lane; Take a left on Patriot Circle; Right on Mason Pond Drive to the Parking Deck.

DIRECTIONS TO FAIRFAX CAMPUS (4400 University Dr.) FROM RONALD REAGAN WASHINGTON NATIONAL AIRPORT
When exiting the airport, follow the signs to Washington, DC North and to the George Washington Parkway north, to I-395. Once on G.W. Parkway, stay in the middle lane to enter I-395 south to Richmond. Immediately move left 3 lanes to remain on I-395 south. Exit I-395 at I-495 North (exit 1D) to Tysons Corner. Exit I-495 at exit 54, Braddock Road West, and take the westbound fork. Follow Braddock Road West for approximately 6 miles. Turn right at Roanoke River Road.* Bear right at the fork in the road. Turn left on Mason Pond Drive; parking is available in the Parking Deck, the last building on the right. An information kiosk is located outside the third level of the deck to help navigate the campus.

Take the CUE Bus (any of the routes stop at GMU). The CUE Bus is free with a valid GMU identification card and $.50 per person otherwise. If traveling by car, exit the Vienna Metro on Nutley Avenue South (243). Follow Nutley to Route 29 and turn right. At Route 50 (Arlington Blvd.), turn right. Stay on Route 50 to Route 123 (Chain Bridge Road) and turn left. Follow Route 123 through the City of Fairfax to University Drive, then turn left. Take your first right at Occoquan RIver Lane. Turn right at the stop sign onto Patriot Circle. At the pond, bear left to stay on Patriot Circle. Take your first left on Mason Pond Drive to the Parking Deck, the last building on your right. An information kiosk is located outside the third level of the deck to help navigate the campus.
