Mason Chess, originally the
GMU Chess Club, has been active since late 2003. Originally a humble club, Mason Chess grew rapidly, seeing
over 200 players by its second year. It continues to thrive primarily on the Fairfax campus but has a occasional presence at Arlington as well.
The first meeting of the fall 2007This semester
meetings will take place
today (Wednesday, AugustWednesdays 28th,from 20075-8pm), as always, outside of the
Gameroom in Student Union Building 1 (SUB1) from 4pm-9pm. All are welcome,
regardless of skill level. Knowledgeableand teachersthere are
willing,ususally andknowledgeable players availablewilling forto teach newcomers .the ropes.The
Chess Team has been
Collegiate State Champion for two years.
Activities include:
-Playing casual games at weekly meetings
-Competition in the
DC-Chess League-
Teaching at a nearby elementary school--
instructors are paid!
-In-house
tournaments-Competition in the state collegiate championship
-Sponsoring
U.S. Chess Federation rated tournaments at both Arlington and Fairfax
-
Simul(taneous) exhibitions -- this is when a very strong player plays many boards at once
All are encouraged to stop by for a weekly meeting, as the semester evolves it is likely that there will be more official sessions during the week.To
