NOAA Ernest Hollings Scholarship Program	The Hollings Scholarship Program provides successful undergraduate applicants with awards that include academic assistance (up to a maximum of $8,000 per year) for full-time study during the 9-month academic year; a 10-week, full-time internship position ($650/week) during the summer at a NOAA facility; and, if reappointed, academic assistance (up to a maximum of $8,000) for full-time study during a second 9-month academic year.

Health Professions Advising

Students who are interested in pursuing a career in the health professions of medicine, dentistry, pharmacy, optometry, or the other dozen or so health-related careers can seek information through the Health Professions Advising Office at http://prehealth.gmu.edu/ .

The Health Professions Advisor is Dr. Emil Chuck (Term Assistant Professor of Biology). He is responsible for writing the institutional committee letter required for all students and alumni who are applying to medical, dental, optometry, veterinary, podiatry, and pharmacy graduate programs. He also advises all the prehealth student organizations.Students and alumni who intend to apply for admission beginning in the summer must request a committee letter in the spring semester before their application period so that the institutional letter can be completed in time.

Highly competitive sophomores should meet with Dr. Chuck early (even as freshmen) to discuss preparing applications for competitive admissions programs like the Early Selection Program at George Washington University School of Medicine (sophomore applicants only) and the Guaranteed Admissions Program at VCU School of Medicine (University Scholars Program only). There are specific GPA and test score requirements for these programs. They must also complete the pre-application process before spring break of the year of their application.

While the Patriots may have their ups and downs over the course of the season, Patriots fans are always up and ready to come out and support their team. While every yellow-shirted person who comes out to the Patriot Center is a supporter, the true fans know what's what when it comes to cheering, heckling, and generally letting the boys on the floor know who's got their back.

Your mission, should you choose to accept it, is to come out to every Patriot basketball game you can and do your utmost to defeat the other team, simply by yelling at them. To aid you, here are a few well known weapons of fandom that real fans already know:

Join the Patriot Platoon! A fan close to the floor is a happy fan.
Get there early! The doors open over an hour before the game starts and Platoon members get in early.
Wear a yellow or green wig, wear a yellow shirt, maybe a little facepaint to look the part.
When the opposing team comes out, hold high your newspaper (usually the Broadside) and feel free to boo them.
During a foul shot, put your hands up like superman and will the ball into the hoop.
Learn the cheers!
Learn the fight song!
Always give Gunston a high five for good luck.
Sing "Living On A Prayer" when instructed by Doc Nix and the Green Machine
Shake your keys at the losing visitors so they remember to start their bus.

The Chesapeake residential community at George Mason University is the newest housing area on the GMU campus. After its completion in fall 2008, Chesapeake will include a total of four suite-style residence halls, an apartment complex, a dining facility, and a fitness center. As of the fall 2007 semester, upperclass students reside in Blue Ridge and Shenandoah halls, and eligible students will move into Piedmont and Tidewater halls before the first day of classes for the spring 2008 semester.

The Rape Woods

Also Known As, "Rape Alley"

In between Presidents’ Park and SUB II is a path that goes through a stretch of woods. This path does not have any visibility from the road, is completely unlit, and has a history of danger. Called “the Rape Woods” by many campus residents, the short trail is often avoided by students as they walk back to their dorms late at night.

One reason, aside from its ominous appearance, is that a few years ago, there were flyers posted up around that area warning residents that a number of pedestrians had been held up by knife-point and robbed there. The place serves as a perfect location for such activity, as there is a bridge where a would-be assailant could easily hide out, waiting for an unsuspecting freshman. An obvious resolution for Fairfax campus students would be to install adequate lighting, but thus far nothing has been done to change the name of the Rape Woods.

The GMU Catholic Campus Ministry, or CCM, is among the largest and most active student groups on campus. A member organization of GMU Campus Ministry and the Religious Organizations Umbrella (ROU) of GMU's student organizations, CCM serves as a "home away from home" to Catholic students at George Mason University through its offering of daily and Sunday Masses, administration of sacraments (e.g., confession), Bible studies, Adoration, weekly social gatherings, and public service outreach to the university and local community.

Headquartered at Saint Robert Bellarmine Chapel (pictured above) on 4515 Roberts Road, CCM is an integral part of many Catholic students' collegiate experience at George Mason, although it also welcomes curious non-Catholics to visit as well. Also of interest to non-Catholic students may be CCM's weekly Rite of Christian Initiation (RCIA) classes, which educate prospective converts to the Catholic faith in Church doctrine and other important information.

As of the fall 2007 semester, Patriots basketball and Redskins football fanatic Father Peter Nassetta (BS, '81) is the resident chaplain of CCM. John More (to whom CCM members always refer by his first and last name) and Catherine Horan (a Texas native but not a Cowboys fan) are the associate campus ministers. Meaghan Doherty ('08) and Ryan Woodard ('08) are the associate student campus ministers.

Bailey's Crossroads is a nearby junction community in Fairfax county, bordering on Alexandria, and was the first home of the academic institution that would later become George Mason University. In Mason’s first semester in 1957, the enrollment was 17 students.

Nothing else was included in the e-mail other than a link to reply to, writethe17@gmail.com. Because the e-mails were BCCed to the recipients, there is no way of knowing who was e-mailed. The Monday morning message was sent in at least six known separate e-mails, minutes apart from each other. The first e-mail was sent out at 12:50 a.m. and the latest known e-mail was sent out at 4:09 a.m.

The e-mails were sent to a small proportion of the Mason community. At first estimate, 347 students, faculty and administrators received the initial e-mails, according to Lisa Carr, the Mason e-mail account administrator. Among those who reported receiving e-mails were Student Government officials, fraternity presidents and a number of University Scholars. In addition, all of the Mason Ambassadors received an e-mail, according to Ambassador President Chris Hild. Several members of Broadside staffalso received the e-mails.

Section 1. That all power is vested in, and consequently derived from, the students; that administrators are their trustees and servants and at all times amenable to them.

Section 2. That all students are by nature equally free and independent and have certain inherent rights, of which, when they enter into the University, they cannot be deprived.

Section 3. That, when any University shall be found inadequate or contrary to the needs of its students, a majority of the student community has an indubitable, inalienable, and indefeasible right to reform, alter, or abolish it.

Section 4. That all power of University policy without consent of the representatives of the students, is injurious to their rights and ought not to be exercised.

Section 5. That the freedom of speech is one of the great foundations of liberty, and can never be restrained but by negligent Universities.

Section 6. That all student concerns within the University shall be addressed, regardless of breadth or nature of said grievance.

The efforts of The 17 reflect our adoration for George Mason University. Albeit a clandestine society, our devotion to this great institution is unmatched. We seek to uphold and restore his core principles and the tradition that is

American Society for Microbiology (Mason Chapter)

The American Society for Microbiology is a professional organization for microbiologists and it sponsors the Mason student chapter. Students can join the club and the national organization for a reduced price and recieve the journal Microbe for a year. The mission of the club, aside from fascilitating club and national membership, is to help students interested in microbiology to find out about the field, make connections with other students and professionals, and visit places relevant to microbiological research. The club sponsors multiple events each semester to accomplish these goals and has a website with information on how to join and what events are coming up in the future.

Past events have included:

A trip to a winery (to see microbes at work!)
A tour of the NIH campus in Maryland
Multiple ice cream socials
Panels of faculty and industry professionals (from public, private, and military sectors)
Presentations on how to get started in a microbiological career
