Is 17's logic flawed?
Nov 2 2007, 2:46 PM EDT | Post edited: Nov 2 2007, 2:46 PM EDT
We the people created our own government, and as such we have the right to change or abolish it. However, we the Mason students did not found our university. Power is NOT derived from the students. Therefore, we do not have the right to alter or abolish GMU. 1  out of 1 found this valuable. Do you?

Sounds like a bunch of idiots who read a wikipedia entry on the philosophy of Che Guevara or something. Or a psych experiment. Do you find this valuable?

Well I think their message resonates with a large number of mason students who feel that the administration really doesn't give students very much say. I mean our officers are all but unknown to us because the election process is so arbitrary. This group could at least makes students aware that they aren't being represented well. Do you find this valuable?

I'm not on campus anymore so I don't know what the full effect has been, but I will say that In my time at GMU, I spoke with a lot of different administrators in different areas. The number one reason they gave for not giving students what they want is because students don't tell them what they want. I think this group sounds like people who like to blame the system, without being able to define what the system is and what exactly they should be blamed for. <begin rant> Representation in policy making? What policies? What do you have to say? Just say it. Solve problems. Talk to the people in charge. Email them and set up a meeting. Write an article. This group doesn't inform. This group frustrates. This is how riots begin. "There's a problem! Let's go!" "Go where? What problem?" "Who cares? Let's just be angry! Get others to join!" This group says students have the right to abolish a university. What does that even mean? It sounds like a loosely-veiled threat of violence. Do you find this valuable?

I now understand your confusion a bit....the whole not being on campus anymore thing. Well basically the people who's job it is to represent us don't really do anything (the student senate, executive branch) and from my experience with the higherups in the university, they like to talk to students but really don't include us in their long term plans. Why should they? They already have our money and in 4 years, we're gone. Sure we might have some power as alumni later, but that doesn't really help our current living conditions/administration set rules/food services. Just "saying" that you disagree without any forum to do so is kind of silly, i think. Anyway this group is almost certainly not violent, they just pretty much did a poor job of editing the Virginia declaration of rights to match their aims. I don't think they're blaming the system, I think they are trying to make a new one that can organize events and protests to things at mason without interference from the administration (as that would be counterproductive). While I like a good number of people in our administration, most of them don't take a challenge to their authority very well and I completely understand the need for a covert group as opposed to a group that is under the financial and administrative thumb of Mason Hall. 0  out of 1 found this valuable.
